Plot Overview
The story begins in the dead of night when three petty thieves—Atsuya, Shota, and Kohei—seek refuge in the long-abandoned Namiya General Store after pulling off a clumsy break-in. While hiding out, a mysterious letter slips through the mail slot in the rolling shutter door.
To their bewilderment, the letter is from 1980, written by a female athlete seeking life advice. They discover that the store acts as a temporal portal: time passes normally inside, but the mail slot is connected to the past. The boys realize that decades ago, the kindly shop owner, Yuji Namiya, used to offer earnest advice to anyone who dropped a letter in the slot, leaving his responses in a milk crate at the back of the shop.
Over the course of a single night, the thieves decide to take Mr. Namiya's place. They read letters from desperate souls in the past and write back using their knowledge of the future. The novel is structured like a puzzle box of five interconnected chapters, tracing the lives of several individuals whose Fates intersect through the store and an orphanage called the Marumitsuen:
- The Moon Hare: A female fencer torn between training for the 1980 Moscow Olympics and spending her final days with her terminally ill boyfriend.
- The Katsuro Fish-Store Musician: A struggling young man who dropped out of university to pursue music, disappointing his traditional family, only to face a tragic choice.
- Green River: A pregnant woman pondering whether to raise a child out of wedlock despite extreme financial hardship.
- Paul King: A young boy obsessed with the Beatles who must decide whether to run away into hiding with his indebted, fleeing parents.
- The Puppy in the Looking Glass: A young woman seeking a way to make fast money to support the foster parents who raised her.
