Ulysses ebook is a monumental modernist novel written by Irish author James Joyce. First published in its entirety in 1922 by Sylvia Beach in Paris, the book chronicles a single, ordinary day—June 16, 1904—in the lives of everyday citizens in Dublin, Ireland. It stands as one of the most celebrated, heavily analyzed, and challenging masterpieces in the history of English literature due to its radical stylistic experimentation and deep exploration of the human psyche.
The Parallel Structure (The Odyssey)
The title Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Joyce meticulously structured the novel's 18 episodes to mirror the journeys, trials, and encounters of Homer’s epic, mapping the mythical grand adventures of ancient Greece onto the mundane realities of early 20th-century Dublin:
  • Leopold Bloom represents Odysseus (Ulysses), the wandering hero. Instead of fighting monsters, he wanders Dublin dealing with grief, anti-Semitism, and his wife's infidelity.
  • Stephen Dedalus represents Telemachus, Odysseus's searching son. He is a cynical, brilliant young intellectual looking for a spiritual father figure.
  • Molly Bloom represents Penelope, Odysseus's faithful wife. Unlike Penelope, Molly is actively unfaithful, but she remains the emotional anchor and bedrock of the novel.
Plot Overview
The narrative tracks Leopold Bloom, a 38-year-old Jewish advertising canvasser, as he goes about his day. His itinerary includes making breakfast for his wife Molly, attending a funeral, visiting a newspaper office, eating lunch, walking on the beach, and eventually visiting a maternity hospital. Throughout his travels, Bloom is plagued by the knowledge that Molly is having an affair with her concert manager, Blazes Boylan, later that afternoon.
Concurrently, Stephen Dedalus (the protagonist of Joyce's earlier work, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) spends his day teaching, arguing about Shakespeare, and drinking heavily to escape his grief over his mother's recent death. Late into the night, Bloom encounters a heavily intoxicated Stephen in Dublin's red-light district ("Nighttown"). Sensing Stephen's vulnerability, Bloom takes a fatherly interest in him, rescueing him from a scuffle and taking him back to his home for a cup of cocoa and a profound conversation in the early hours of the morning.
