Ebook Wuthering Heights epub is the only novel written by English author Emily Brontë, published in 1847 under the male pen name Ellis Bell. Set on the bleak, windswept Yorkshire moors, it is a masterpiece of Gothic fiction and tragedy that shocked Victorian readers with its raw portrayal of mental cruelty, obsession, and passionate, destructive love.
The Framed Narrative Structure
The novel employs a highly unique, multi-layered framing device utilizing two unreliable narrators:
- The Outer Frame (1801): Mr. Lockwood, a wealthy and shallow city gentleman, rents Thrushcross Grange to escape society. After an unsettling, ghost-haunted night spent at the neighboring estate, Wuthering Heights, he begs his housekeeper to explain the history of his brooding landlord, Heathcliff.
- The Inner Frame: Nelly Dean, the pragmatic family housekeeper who grew up alongside the characters, narrates the sprawling, multi-generational history.
Plot Overview
Nelly’s tale begins when the late master of Wuthering Heights, Mr. Earnshaw, brings home a dark-skinned, quiet orphan boy from Liverpool and names him Heathcliff. Earnshaw's daughter, Catherine (Cathy), forms an instant, feral bond with him, but her older brother, Hindley, fiercely despises the boy. When Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley inherits the estate and reduces Heathcliff to a humiliated, unpaid farm laborer.
Despite this brutality, Cathy and Heathcliff remain soulmates. However, after a chance stay at Thrushcross Grange—the elegant, civilized home of the wealthy Linton family—Cathy becomes enticed by high society. Believing it would degrade her to marry the penniless, uneducated Heathcliff, she accepts a marriage proposal from the refined Edgar Linton. Heartbroken and humiliated, Heathcliff vanishes into the night.
Three years later, Heathcliff returns as a wealthy, educated, and deeply vengeful gentleman. He embarks on a calculated crusade to systematically destroy the Earnshaw and Linton families. He buys up Hindley's gambling debts to seize Wuthering Heights and ruthlessly elopes with Edgar's sister, Isabella, purely to abuse her. After giving birth to Edgar's daughter, Cathy dies of brain fever, driving Heathcliff into absolute madness as he begs her ghost to haunt him forever. Heathcliff extends his multi-generational revenge onto their children before eventually starving himself to death, desperate to reunite with Catherine's spirit.
